RE: Procedures for entering a WH, some good advice above. There is one item that is assumed in the post (Im assuming the poster has some experience in WH's and thus didnt think to include it BUT)
First thing I do, is highlight the WH, right click it and figure out if its just about to collapse, or if it has some time on it. Seems pretty obvious (re: you just found the wh, so you would have done it on the high sec side), but trust me, its a very very good habit to get into, and you may have gotten excited about potential phat lootz and forgotten to do it before. Next thing - BOOKMARK IT!!
Secondly, its hinted at in there, but after the directional scan, I make a safe spot right away regardless of what I find. Usually I also make a second after, depending on my ship sizes (second SS is usually on the outside [farthest planet ie: p10] of the solar system, [depending on the solar system size] as often people will check their directionals first before launching a probe, and if the second SS is out of reach of their directional, it may give you some time. This has worked in my favour a couple of times)
lastly, I drop a deep space scanner probe before any other probe type.
Several bits of advice are contingent upon intentions of entering the WH. If your going PvP, then of course, after checking the WH, and creating the SS, drop the combat probes.
Lastly, poster above caught it but a PvP ship will not suffice for PvE. It will get spanked by the sleepers.
Edit: lastly - not sure if you are aware or not, but there is no local chat channel in a WH, thus you cant tell what/who is in there, and therefore always assume its hostile. Instead of having your chat channels up in your screen layout, you should have your scanner up and pressing that scan button (DO NOT HAVE THE USE OVERVIEW SETTINGS SELECTED - sorry for the caps but that is critical) and make sure you have the results of the scan listed by Type/Name in reverse order (cant remember the heading -the far left field) as probes will appear as "Scan Probe" or "Scanner Probe" The quicker you find it in the list, the quicker you can gtfo out of your site and head to your safe, and bounce between safes.
